SAINTS: The Patriarch Joseph — A Story Of A Dreamer, by Greg Friedman

March 17, 2017

From: Lent With The Saints Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a; ; Psalm 105:16-21; Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46 Two Biblical characters are the subject of Broadway musicals by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and both are featured in today’s readings.  They are Joseph, the son of Israel (Jacob) in Genesis, and Jesus, the “superstar” of Matthew’s gospel!  Webber seized on the detail of Joseph’s coat (here simply a “long tunic”) as the launch point for one musical.  But there’s much in the Joseph story to entertain. Joseph the dreamer is the victim of violence at the hands of his jealous brothers.  He goes on to have interesting adventures in Egypt and rises to become Pharaoh’s adviser in a time [...]

STATIONS OF THE NATIVITY: Joseph’s Dream by Raymond Chapman

December 13, 2016

From Stations of the Nativity: Meditations on the Incarnation of Christ Before the Stations Almighty God, whose blessed Son took our human nature so that we might regain our lost innocence and be restored to the divine image that was disfigured by sin, grant that as we meditate on the mystery of his humanity we may share the glory of his divinity, who lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. A hymn may be sung: the familiar Christmas hymns tell of the wonder of the Incarnation and the following is particularly suitable (click on hymn title to be directed to the YouTube video of its performance): Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus 5: Joseph’s Dream V: We adore thee O Christ [...]

PRAYER: Salt Of The Earth, Day 5 — Listen To This Dream

January 22, 2016

A Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, 2016; created by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland Starting Point Reflections from the editors of an ecumenical journal, Kas Mus Vieno? (What Unites Us?), founded in 2005 as a response to disunity. Christian disunity hurts.  Churches suffer from their inability to be united as one family at the Lord’s Table.  They suffer from rivalry and from histories of combativeness.  When Joseph shares his dream with his brothers they react with anger and violence as the dream implies they must bow down before him.  In Egypt, when they ultimately do bow before him, they experience reconciliation and grace rather than the abasement and dishonor they feared. Jesus, like Joseph’s story, [...]

POETRY: The Temptation Of St. Joseph by W. H. Auden

December 17, 2014

From For the Time Being I JOSEPH My shoes were shined, my pants were cleaned and pressed, And I was hurrying to meet My own true Love: But a great crowd grew and grew Till I could not push my way through, Because A star had fallen down the street; When they saw who I was, The police tried to do their best. CHORUS [off] Joseph, you have heard What Mary says occurred; Yes, it may be so. Is it likely? No. JOSEPH The bar was gay, the lighting well-designed, And I was sitting down to wait My own true Love: A voice I’d heard before, I think, Cried: “This is on the House. I drink To him Who does not know it is too late;” When I asked for the time, Everyone was very kind. CHORUS [off] Mary may be pure, But, Joseph, are you [...]

PRAYER: Vocation Prayers of and to the saints

April 30, 2012

from Francis of Assisi Most high, glorious God, enlighten the darkness of our minds. Give us a right faith, a firm hope and a perfect charity, so that we may always and in all things act according to your holy will. Amen. to Joseph O great Saint Joseph, you were completely obedient to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Obtain for me the light to know God’s will, to carry it out faithfully, and to choose the vocation that will lead me to a happy eternity. Amen. from Ignatius of Loyola Dearest [...]
