DIABOLOGY: Encounter With Evil, by Malcolm Godwin

August 11, 2016

From Angels: An Endangered Species We now turn to what are claimed to be first-hand accounts of meetings with the enemy.  During the five centuries after Christ many Christian hermits and monks withdrew into the wilderness in order to leave worldly temptations.  Legions of demons seemed to follow them with enthusiasm, if the contemporary monastic diabology is anything to by by.  This diabology was a new type of writing which gave instructions as to how to resist temptation and cope with the threat of demonic attacks.  It also gave the writers an opportunity to give the most lurid accounts of the archenemy himself. The most influential of these visionary, yet practical, manuals of how to deal with both angel and Devil was the [...]

DEMONS: How Angels Fell by Vinita Hampton Wright

August 9, 2016

From A Catalogue of Angels I watched Satan fall from Heaven like a flash of lightning.  See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. (Luke 10:18-19) No matter which holy text, legend, or theory you believe, all versions of the angels’ fall have one thing in common: the angels’ relationship to human beings.  The Christian story is possibly the most kind, in terms of the beginning of the strife.  The first we hear of the devil, or Satan, he is in the form of a serpent in the Garden of Eden, convincing Eve that all is not as God says it is.  We get hints of the devil’s beginning – Satan had once been an angel – in one or two [...]

FALLEN ANGELS: A War In Heaven by David Albert Jones

August 8, 2016

From Angels: A History Now war arose in Heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in Heaven.  And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the Earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.  And I heard a loud voice in Heaven, saying, “Now the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. Rejoice then, O Heaven and you that dwell there!  But woe to you, O Earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is [...]

It wasn’t anything I ever expected to find in my visions. It started out fairly normally.  I kept being shown that there was a great concern in the world.  A lot of people had the same prayer on their hearts. So I looked into it. I found someone who was passionate for this matter. And had written a number of prayers and posted them online. Probably I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help it.  I read the prayers and was horrified. So, being a former editor, I ripped them apart and sent the author my insights. Why pray for understanding when what is needed is food and shelter?  You see, I can almost claim the world’s championship trophy in understanding. But all the understanding in the world doesn’t do squat [...]

MICHAEL: Helper And Defender Of Christians

July 28, 2016

From St. Michael the Archangel (author unknown) Besides the protection which the glorious Archangel Michael extends to the church at large, he is also the protector of every individual Christian and of all Christian nations.  How fortunate we are in having so powerful an advocate!  Surely, never so urgently as at the present time have Christians needed Saint Michael’s help to remain steadfast in their faith.  Unbelief has carried its insolence to the very limit and boldly proclaims that there is no God.  Blasphemy against Jesus Christ, against his mysteries and his doctrines has increased in the most frightful manner.  It is our duty to be faithful Christians, to confess our faith openly and energetically, and to preserve a [...]

DEMONS: When God Is A Sheep In Wolf’s Clothing by James Reho

October 27, 2015

From Parabola Saint Anthony of Egypt and the Demons “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven; then come, follow me.”  These words of Jesus, read at the liturgy in the Christian church at Coma, Egypt, around the year 270 CE, initiated a new life for Anthony, orphaned six months earlier at the age of eighteen or twenty.  He divested himself of his assets, distributed them to the poor, and began a quest for union with God through prayer, solitude, and spiritual discipline.  Not until Francis of Assisi would another individual have such a seismic effect upon the spirituality and worldview of Christianity.  And for Anthony, his paradigm-shifting [...]

EXORCISM: All That Jesus Does Has Purpose, by Don Dickerman

October 16, 2014

From When Pigs Move In What wonderful information is provided to us in Mark chapter 5 concerning demons.  Jesus had made a special trip to see a man tormented with demons.  We don’t know what prompted the journey across the Sea of Galilee.  As the scripture reads, it seems unplanned and without prior arrangements.  Jesus had been teaching in parables on the west side of the sea when he spoke, “Let us pass over unto the other side.”  It was seven miles to the “other side.” It was evening, and he doubtless and tired and weary from the day.  The disciples “took him even as he was in the ship.”  It seems that almost immediately he retreated to the back part of the ship to sleep.  I have often [...]

THE CHURCH: Exorcism And The Path To Deliverance, by Jose Antonio Fortea

October 14, 2014

From Interview with an Exorcist What is an exorcism? The rite of exorcism is the official ritual of the church in which a demon is ordered in the name of Christ to leave the body of a possessed person.  While the ecclesiastical rite of exorcism contains many secondary parts (e.g., the litany of the saints, the liturgy of the Word, the Lord’s Prayer, etc.), its essence is the casting out of the demon.  The prayers directed to God are deprecatory – that is to say, God is begged for his assistance in casting out the demon.  Nothing is ever asked of the demon; rather, he is ordered to depart by the name of the Redeemer.  If an exorcism does not have a “casting out,” it is not a true exorcism. In the gospels, could [...]

I never saw it coming. I never even imagined it could happen to me. The first thing it taught me was that all while I was thinking I was so clever staying under my “target’s” radar, finding access to his soul to bind it, to keep him from harming others any longer, I could drop enough of my own defenses in the fray, leaving a blind side, and be bound myself. My soul was bound. I don’t know what the experience of this is on an evil soul, how the person feels once its accomplished, but, for me, it felt like I was being choked.  Bodily choked. Choked.  Chained.  Fastened to the floor. It was the stark contrast to my normal operating sensations that really got me. In warfare, or in flight, as I like to call it, my [...]

POETRY: The Demons, by Alexander Pushkin

October 8, 2014

(Translated by Irina Henderson) Clouds are whirling, clouds are swirling; Though invisible, the moon Lights the flying snow while blurring Turbid sky and nigh in one. On and on through broad expanses; Sleigh-bell tinkling—din-din-din… Casting fearful, fearful glances At the dark and eerie plain! “Driver, hey there!….” “Can’t go faster: Drifts have blown across the road; Heavy for the horses, master, And my lids together glued; For the life of me, beside us, Tracks are nowhere to be found; It must be a demon guides us, As he circles round and round. “Over there: see him cavorting, Blowing, spitting in my face; Look—and now the horse is snorting On the edge of the abyss; Like some verst-pole [...]

DESERT FATHERS: Dealing With The Devil by Michael Patella

October 7, 2014

From Angels and Demons Desert Monasticism The apocalyptic battles dramatically described in the Pseudepigrpha should not and cannot be interpreted literally, and no group knew this point better than the monastic women and men, who did so much in shaping Christian theology in the early days of the church.  The monks and nuns dwelling in the remote deserts were never far from daily confrontation with demons, as well as appearances of angels, and the stories of their battles with the diabolical world provide us with some of the best thought and practice of living in a world redeemed from sin and death.  From this desert literature, we can learn a great deal about how to approach the supernatural in our day. The monks and nuns moved to the [...]

DESERT FATHERS: Evagrius Debates Three Demons

October 6, 2014

From The Life of the Holy Evagrius, Written by Palladius Three demons in the form of clergy met him during the middle of the day. Their idea (to disguise themselves) was so good that he had no idea they were demons.  Indeed, his door to the courtyard was always kept barred; when he found it shut, he knew immediately that his visitors were demons. Each, therefore, asked him his own question, and they said to him, “Since we have heard that you speak articulately concerning the faith, we have come so you might persuade us.” He said to them, “Say what you wish.” The first said, “I am a Eunomian; I came in order for you to tell me: Is the Father unbegotten or begotten?”  He said to him, “I will not [...]

EVIL: Answers To Common Questions About Christus Victor, by Mark Driscoll & Gerry Breshears

June 24, 2014

From Death By Love Can Christians be possessed by demons? This is one of those questions that many people answer too quickly.  The problem is that the word possess has several meanings.  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary it can mean three things.  First, possess can mean “own” so that a Christian would essentially belong to Satan.  Second, possess can mean “dominate” so that a Christian would be controlled by Satan.  Third, possess can mean “influence” so that the life of a Christian would be marked by the influences of Satan.  Obviously, what people mean when they use the word possessed matters very much when answering the question, “Can Christians be possessed by [...]

SPIRITUAL WARFARE: Handling Demons, or, The Art of the Broom

December 6, 2013

I’ve spent my life straddling two worlds.  And, to be honest, it has, on the whole, been annoying.  Really, really annoying. Working with God all these years has sharpened that expression of my brain that loves exactness.  I was an editor until I realized that I could never stop editing.  I would edit roadside signs.  I would edit menus.  I would edit pretty much everything coming out of anyone’s mouth. So I stopped being an editor. But with God, in some ways, I get to continue being an editor.  Because what I learn from him always has an exact edge.  It is precise. It is absolute. Hard, like a rock.  Solid. But with people, it’s always about mushing things together.  It’s OK to just think this about that, [...]

POETRY: Spel Against Demons, by Gary Snyder

The release of Demonic Energies in the name of the people must cease Messing with blood sacrifice in the name of Nature must cease The stifling self-indulgence in anger in the name of Freedom must cease this is death to clarity death to compassion the man who has the soul of the wolf knows the self-restraint of the wolf aimless executions and slaughterings are not the work of wolves and eagles but the work of hysterical sheep The Demonic must be devoured! EVIL: Biblical Characteristics of Demon Possession, by Steven Waterhouse

September 24, 2013

From Life’s Tough Questions The New Testament records many symptoms of demon possession.  Any consideration of demonic control should begin with an evaluation of a person by a list of the Biblical facts about demon possession. Alterations in Voice Demons would speak through the body of a possessed person.  They would claim to be separate from the person (Luke 4:33-34). And shouting out with a loud voice, he said, ‘What business do we have to do with each other, Jesus, son of the most high God?  I implore you by God, do not torment me!’  For he had been saying to him, ‘Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!’ And he was asking him, ‘What is your name?’  And he said to him, ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’ (Mark [...]

PRAYER: The Prayer Of Jesus—Power To Expel Demons by Ignatius Brianchaninov

September 23, 2013

From On the Prayer of Jesus: The Classic Guide to the Practice of Unceasing Prayer as Found in The Way of the Pilgrim Among the mysterious, wonderful properties of the name of Jesus is the power and property of expelling demons.  This property was disclosed by the Lord himself.  He said that those who believe in him, in his name they will cast out demons. (Mark 16:17)  Special attention must be paid to this property of the name of Jesus, because it is of the greatest importance for those practicing the Prayer of Jesus.  First of all a few words must be said concerning the dwelling of demons in human beings.  This occurs in two ways: one can be called sensible, the other moral.  Satan dwells sensibly in a man when with his being he [...]

EVIL: The Ever-Creative Nature of The Devil And His Demons

June 3, 2013

I’ve been studying someone’s soul recently.  I guess you could say that I’ve been working on finding a way to better understand the process of healing a wounded soul.  And with this person, I’ve come away with a sense that the Devil and his minions are really, really clever fellows. You could say, I’m actually impressed by their range of approaches and the ease with which they can throw temptation across someone’s path. In my definition of hell, there are four sectors: the destructive and constructive expressions of hate, and the destructive and constructive aspects of love. I have come to conclude that the Devil sources from the sector of hell that is the destructive realm of love.  It is the realm [...]
