LENTEN MEDITATION: Under The Great Rock by Carlo Carretto

March 1, 2016

The track, white in the sun, wound ahead of me in a vague outline.  The furrows in the sand made by the wheels of the great oil trucks forced me to keep alert every second, if I was to keep the jeep on the move. The sun was high in the sky, and I felt tired.  Only the wind blowing on the hood of the car allowed the jeep to continue, although the temperature was like hell-fire and the water was boiling in the radiator.  Every now and then I fixed my gaze on the horizon.  I knew that in the area there were great blocks of granite embedded in the sand: they provided highly desirable sources of shade under which to pitch camp and wait the evening before proceeding with the journey. In fact, towards mid-day, I found what I was looking for. [...]

HOLY SPIRIT: Loving Communication by Carlo Carretto

January 28, 2013

From The God Who Comes We need loving communication, we need the presence of the Spirit. That is why I do not believe in theologians who do not pray, who are not in humble communication of love with God. Neither do I believe in the existence of any human power to pass on authentic knowledge of God. Only God can speak about himself, and only the Holy Spirit, who is love, can communicate this knowledge to us. When there is a crisis in the church, it is always here: a crisis of contemplation. The church wants to feel able to explain about her spouse even when she has lost sight of him; even when, although she has not been divorced, she no longer knows his embrace, because curiosity has gotten the better of her and she has gone searching for [...]

GOD 101: Intimacy, by Carlo Carretto

August 28, 2012

From The God Who Comes Marital love is an image, however, pale, of the reality which develops little by little between the Absolute and the creature, between God and humankind, between Yahweh and Israel. In marital love it is not enough to study the beloved, write poems, or receive cards from far away.  Couples must marry, say “yes” to one another, go behind the veil of intimacy, delight in one another — exultantly, become close, cultivate friendship, stay together as much as possible, coalesce their wills, make two things one, as scripture says. But pretending to know the other just by studying him in books or photographs means remaining outside real knowledge, real mystery. Today, many persons who seek or study God do just that.  [...]

GOD 101: To See The Way Things Are, by Carlo Caretto

June 14, 2012

From The God Who Comes Then we come to understand the dimensions of Heaven; then we see things as they really are, and we see God as really God! But then, too, we realize that this cannot last, that in order to keep its gratuitous quality, the fragrance of that hour must be paid for in a harsh and severe way. Perhaps because it would all be too beautiful? Perhaps because contemplation would destroy the roots of action? Perhaps because you would never again get anything done, as though you were on too perfect a honeymoon? Perhaps because Heaven would start here and now, whereas the way is still long, and possession of the Beloved is feeble? Yes, all this and many other things are true. But there is one other thing which seems to me still [...]
