O Lord, give us grace not only to be hearers of the word, but also doers of the same; not only to love, but to live thy gospel; not only to profess, but also to practice thy blessed commandments, to the honor of thy holy name. Amen.
Heavenly Father, who watches over thy faithful people and mightily defends them, we thank thee that it has pleased thee to take care of us thy servants during the night past, and to give us needful sleep to refresh our bodies. We beseech thee to show the same goodness to us this day, so preserving and ruling over us that we may neither think, nor speak, nor do anything displeasing to thee, or hurtful to our neighbor, but that all our doings may be agreeable to thy most holy will, and may advance thy glory, so that, when thou shalt call us hence, we may be found the children, not of darkness, but of light; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Lord, Heavenly Father, by whose divine ordinance the darkness covers the Earth and brings unto us bodily rest and quietness, we render thee our hearty thanks for the loving-kindness which thou hast shown, in preserving us during the past day, and in giving us all things necessary for our health and comfort. And we beseech thee, for Jesus Christ’s sake, to forgive us all the sins we have committed in thought, word, or deed, and that thou wilt shadow us this night under the wings of thy almighty power, and defend us from all power of the evil one. May our souls, whether sleeping or waking, wait upon thee, delight in thee, and evermore praise thee, so that when the light of day returns, we may rise with pure and thankful hearts, casting away the works of darkness and putting on the armor of light; through Jesus Christ. Amen.
