PRAYER: Limbs Of Christ, by Hildegard of Bingen

O eternal God,
Turn us into the arms and hands,
The legs and feet
Of your beloved Son, Jesus.

You gave birth to him in Heaven
Before the creation of the Earth.

You gave birth to us on Earth,
To become his living body.

Make us worthy to be his limbs,
And so worthy to share
In his eternal bliss.

Amen.

  1. Thanks Julia. This beautiful poem seems to contain almost the entire message of mysticism.

I’d like to mention two books in case you don’t know them. I have no idea whether you’d like them but I try to mention them whenever I can. I think Hildegard would have endorsed ‘A Course in Miracles’, which you probably know, a book that explains this poem at inordinate length, and also ‘God and the World of Signs’ by Andrew Robinson, affordable copies of which can be found. The latter explains Hildegard’s poem by reference to the metaphysical ideas of your great American philosopher CS Peirce. A most unusual book.

Would you recommend a particular book on Hildegard?
