Thy Peace Be With Us Evermore
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
Thou gracious Power, whose mercy lends
The light of home, the smile of friends,
Our families in Thine arms enfold
As in the peaceful days of old.
For all the blessings life has brought,
For all its sorrowing hours have taught,
For all we mourn, for all we keep,
The hands we clasp, the loved that sleep.
The noontide sunshine of the past,
These brief, bright moments fading fast,
The stars that gild our darkening years,
The twilight ray from holier spheres.
We thank Thee, Father; let Thy grace
Our narrowing circle still embrace,
Thy mercy shed its heavenly store,
Thy peace be with us evermore.
Where Cross The Crowded Ways Of Life
Frank Mason North
Where cross the crowded ways of life,
Where sound the cries of race and clan
Above the noise of selfish strife,
We hear Thy voice, O Son of man!
In haunts of wretchedness and need,
On shadowed thresholds dark with fears,
From paths where hide the lures of greed,
We catch the vision of Thy tears.
From tender childhood’s helplessness,
From woman’s grief, man’s burdened toil,
From famished souls, from sorrow’s stress,
Your heart has never known recoil.
The cup of water given for Thee,
Still holds the freshness of Thy grace;
Yet long these multitudes to view
The sweet, compassion of Your face.
O Master, from the mountainside
Make haste to heal these hearts of pain;
Among these restless throngs abide;
O tread the city’s streets again.
Till sons of men shall learn Your love
And follow where Your feet have trod,
Till, glorious from Your heaven above,
Shall come the city of our God!
A Prayer For The City
We thank You for the gift of life
and for the cycle of blessing that holds the world in being.
We thank You for those who are alive to the fact that they are blessed
and bless others in return, for people of vision with generous hearts
who understand their obligation to give back to the world from the
abundance they have received.
We ask You to bless this city and its leadership in these times of
challenge and stress.
We ask that You raise up among us people of generosity and imagination
who help make the world a place of fulfillment and celebration
for all Your children.
May the leadership of this city call us out of the fortress into the
banquet of life where we are both hosts and guests,
welcoming all creatures to a table where no one is turned away
and there is enough for all.
Help us to choose.
Help us to act.
Help us to be.
The world is one.
