From Becoming Fire: Through the Year with the Desert Fathers and Mothers
Tears and vainglory
Abba Moses said, “Through tears a person acquires the virtues and through tears comes remission of sins. When you weep, therefore, do not raise your voice with your groaning, and do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. (Matthew 6:3) The left hand is vainglory.”
Dancing in the midst of your soul
Listen concerning the way you have asked about. Be attentive; stand with the Lord. If you keep these words, you will be one of the elect in all things.
For it is written: Glory will go before those who are humble. (Proverbs 29:23) And again, The wisdom of the humble person lifts high that person’s head. (Sirach 11:1) And again, Whom will I look upon except the person who is humble and gentle and who trembles at my words? (Isaiah 66:2)
And again it is written: The bones of the humble will rejoice with you in every way. (Psalm 50:10) And again, The prayer of a humble person is immediately heard. (Sirach 4:6)
Again it is written: Look on my humility and my suffering and forgive all my sins. (Psalm 24:18)
See what sort of thing humility is: If you acquire it, you have acquired everything.
And again: Keep your body holy and the holy angels will come to you and give you joy, and you will see God.
It is written: I have seen the Lord of Hosts with my eyes. (Isaiah 6:5)
Again it is written: I heard you with the hearing of the ears and just now I saw you with my eyes. (Job 42:5)
And the Holy Spirit will illumine all your members, and the twelve virtues will dance in the midst of your soul, and the Cherubim and Seraphim will shelter you beneath their wings.
