Don’t Be Discouraged
It’s easy to grow downhearted
When nothing goes your way.
It’s easy to be discouraged
When you have a troublesome day.
But trouble is only a challenge
to spur you on to achieve
The best that God has to offer
if you have the faith to believe.
— Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou dost preserve my life;
thou dost stretch out thy hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and thy right hand deliver me. (Psalm 138:7)
God’s Hand is Always There
I am perplexed and often vexed
And sometimes I cry and sadly sigh,
But do not think, dear Father above,
That I question you or your unfailing love.
It’s just that sometimes when I reach out,
You seem to be nowhere about,
And while I’m sure you love me still
And I know in my heart that you always will,
Somehow I feel I cannot reach you.
And though I get on my knees and beseech you,
I cannot bring you close to me,
And I feel adrift on life’s raging sea.
But though I cannot find your hand
To lead me on to the promised land,
I still believe with all my being
Your hand is there beyond my seeing.
— Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God,
that in due time he may exalt you.
Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. (1 Peter 5:6-7)
When we are deeply disturbed with a problem
and our minds are filled with doubt,
And we struggle to find a solution
but there seems to be no way out,
We futilely keep on trying
to untangle our web of distress,
But our own little, puny efforts
meet with very little success.
And finally, exhausted and weary,
discouraged and downcast and low,
with no foreseeable answer
and with no other place to go,
We kneel down in sheer desperation
and slowly and stumblingly pray,
Then impatiently wait for an answer,
which we fully expect right away.
And then when God does not answer
in one sudden instant, we say,
“God does not seem to be listening,
so why should be bother to pray?”
But God can’t get through to the anxious,
who are much too impatient to wait —
You have to believe in God’s promise
that he comes not too soon or too late.
— “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek and you will find.
Knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds,
and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)
